Don Cornelius Death: L.A. Coroner Addresses 'Soul Train' Creator's Cause of Death

How did Don Cornelius die? The Los Angeles County Department of Coroner said in a Thursday e-mail that it is investigating what caused the Soul Train creator's sudden death on Wednesday.

Mr. Cornelius is scheduled for examination today, wrote Craig R. Harvey, the department's chief coroner investigator and chief of operations. At this time, we have no further information or final cause and manner of death determination by the cCoroner to release.

The results of the examination, when it is released, should reveal the cause of Don Cornelius' death, as well as clarification about the circumstances surrounding his final moments of life.

The coroner has also not released its initial death report.

The official report is not yet available for public release, Harvey wrote in his e-mail.

Don Cornelius was found dead in his Sherman Oaks, Calif., home on Wednesday morning. Authorities told TMZ that he died of an apparent suicide.

Police found his body at 4 a.m. PST with a gunshot wound to the head that officials believe was self-inflicted, according to TMZ.

Don Cornelius' body was then transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 75 years old.

It is not definitively known why Cornelius would have wanted to kill himself, but he had undergone a difficult divorce and was said to have been in failing health in recent years, according to the New York Times.
