Dove Cameron Gets Honest About Being A Disney Star: 'I Had Huge Impostor Syndrome'
Dove Cameron has revealed that she never looked at herself as a "Disney girl," and she has her impostor syndrome to blame for it.
"I never had that moment where I was like, 'I'm a Disney girl,'" the 26-year-old singer and actress, who appeared in the Disney series "Liv and Maddie" from 2013 to 2017, told Los Angeles Times Monday. "I never looked at Miley [Cyrus] or Demi [Lovato] or Selena [Gomez] or Zendaya or Bella [Thorne] or anybody — Hilary Duff or anybody that came before me — I never looked at them and thought, you and me — same."
Cameron went on to share that she "always" felt like a "strange outlier who doesn't belong and who will never fit in," before adding, "I had huge impostor syndrome. So I don't really look to anybody else for a roadmap."
She also talked about her journey from being a Disney star to becoming a pop singer, noting that it was nothing but an accident.
"This whole narrative that I was on Disney and then found my way out with a pop song, it was a total f--king accident," she said in reference to her new song, "Boyfriend," which peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated June 11.
Cameron, who announced being a queer during an Instagram Live last year, also discussed how being a queer artist has influenced her music during the interview.
"Every song of mine is a queer song because I'm a queer artist," she explained. "Does that mean that every song is 'I am G-A-Y?' No. I think there's gonna be a lot of room in my artistry to talk about things other than that I love women."
The singer disclosed in an interview last month that she was "never confused" about her identity, adding that "queer" works best for her.
"I felt like I wouldn't be accepted and I had this strange narrative that people wouldn't believe me," she said at the time. "I hope it helps, that's why I came out. It felt like something that I could never talk about. I feel like the industry has changed a lot in terms of having room for people with platforms to be human and not to be picked apart."
On the work front, Cameron will be next seen in the movies "Issac" and "Field Notes on Love." She will also appear in the TV series "Powerpuff."
