Drunk Relative Rapes 80-Year-Old Woman, Leaves Her In Unconscious State

A man in India invited an 80-year-old relative to his home on the pretext of dinner and raped her.

On Sunday, the 35-year-old accused invited the woman home and when she arrived, he started making sexual advances. He later raped the woman, leaving the octogenarian in an unconscious state. The incident took place in Budaun, a city in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, Latestly reported.

When the woman’s relative learned about her ordeal, they immediately filed a police complaint. Initially, the investigators did not believe in the allegations as they thought they were an outcome of a family dispute.

However, after a preliminary investigation, they found that the allegations leveled against the man to be true, following which, the accused was traced and taken into custody on charges of rape. During interrogation, the man confessed to the crime.

The probe also revealed the man was under the influence of alcohol when he committed the crime.

The victim underwent a medical examination Monday, the results of which were awaited.

"A case has been registered against the accused. It seems he was under the influence at the time. The condition of the woman is stable. We have recorded her statement. The medical team has sent the vaginal swab swabs for a forensic test," Budaun SSP Sankalp Sharma told the Times of India.

The accused remained in prison as of Tuesday.

India has been witnessing a rise in rape cases in the last few years, making it the fourth most common crime committed against women in the country. According to statistics, in 2017 alone, over 32,500 cases of rape were registered in India, that is, about 90 rape cases per day.

Last week, a 16-year-old girl in the western Indian state of Maharashtra was gang-raped twice in less than four hours after she left her home following an argument with her family. She was raped by six men before she was spotted by police. The teen, who was believed to be mentally challenged, was then handed over to a shelter where it was revealed that the girl was raped. Based on the girl’s statement, the accused were taken into custody.
