Ed Sheeran Celebrates 3 Billion Streams Of 'Shape of You' On Spotify [Watch]
Ed Sheeran's "Shape Of You" music track from his 2017 album, "Divide," became the first song to hit three billion streams on Spotify. The singer took to Instagram on Wednesday to celebrate the milestone by sharing two videos.
"I just heard 'Shape of You' has reached 3 billion streams on Spotify, which is absolutely insane," the 30-year-old singer said in the first video.
Sheeran recalled the moment when the song first hit one billion and he thought it was "weird," adding, "It's the first song to hit 3 billion streams and I'm really really chuffed with it!"
The musician further shared some insight regarding the music track, which was released in 2017, and noted that it wasn't supposed to release as a part of the "Divide" album, instead he planned to drop it as a single.
"This song wasn't really meant to make the album but when I finished making the song, Ben Cook from my label was basically saying 'You have to put this on the album,’" the singer explained. "It had to be a single. And I said to him, I want 'Castle on the Hill' to be the first single, that's going to be bigger.'"
However, after the discussion Cook and Sheeran decided to put both the songs out in the album. Sheeran added, "And I have to say, Ben, I was wrong and you were very much right. And here we are!"
In the second video, Sheeran encouraged fans to write in the comments about their experience and stories that are attached to this song.
Fans took to the comments section and shared their experience.
"Hearing it live on tour, front row, with Ed wearing the national football teams Jersey," one of the fans wrote while another fan recalled, "Don't have a story actually but it reminds me of a guy I'm in love with."
"Love this song when I first heard it. It takes this 60 year old mom back about 40 years," a user commented. "We all get up and dance around the room when it comes on! Love ❤ your music so much. Incredible lyrics and voice."
On the personal front, Sheeran is married to Cherry Seaborn since 2019 and they welcomed a baby Lyra Antarctica in August 2020.
