Ed Sheeran Reveals If He Dated Wife In High School It 'Would've Been A Disaster'
Ed Sheeran has revealed he and his wife Cherry Seaborn have been "really close friends" since they were young but never dated until they were adults. Apparently, the "Perfect" singer believes "it would have been a disaster" if he dated her in high school.
Sheeran sat down in an interview with Dax Shepard on "Armchair Expert" Monday. During their conversation, the English singer recalled his childhood friendship with his wife and the day they reunited.
According to Sheeran, they have known each other their entire childhood. Seaborn then got a scholarship to Duke University while he went on a tour, which eventually led to them losing touch.
Luckily, they found their way back to each other as they both happened to be in New York City one night in 2015. His friend Lauren, whom he took on a tour with him, played an important role in their reunion.
"One day, she [Lauren] was in New York and she went to go out with Cherry because Cherry worked on Wall Street," he said. "And then she was like, 'Oh Cherry Seaborn is in town, do you want to hang out?' I was like, 'Yes.'"
He also admitted that at the time, he felt nervous because the last time he'd seen Seaborn, they'd "hooked up."
"In my head, the last time I'd seen Cherry, we hooked up. So in my head, I was like what if she remembers that because it was like a while ago. It was very innocent. Very gentle, it was a kiss," the "Photograph" singer said.
Last month, Sheeran revealed on the Norwegian-Swedish talk show Skavlan that his proposal to Seaborn nearly didn't happen as planned.
"Cherry's parents never married. They're now married, but they were together for 30 years. So she hasn't grown up thinking that marriage is important," he said. "So I was walking into it being like, 'I don't know if she's going to say yes.' I really didn't know."
Fortunately for Sheeran, Seaborn accepted his marriage proposal, and the childhood friends finally got engaged in 2017. They tied the knot in January 2019. In August 2020, the couple welcomed their beautiful daughter Lyra Antarctica.
