Elderly Maryland Woman Shot To Death In Cemetery, Husband Critically Injured, Suspect Later Found Dead

An elderly Maryland woman was shot to death and her husband was critically injured during a shootout that occurred in a veteran cemetery in Bear, Delaware.

According to the Delaware State Police, an 85-year-old woman was fatally shot and her 86-year-old husband was critically injured on Friday morning. Both the victims hailed from Elkton, Maryland. The identities of the victims were not revealed.

The horrifying incident took place in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, a state-owned cemetery overseen by the Office of Veterans Services, a division of the Delaware Department of State.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband, who suffered serious gunshot wounds, was rushed to a nearby hospital. He was reported to be in critical condition.

On Friday afternoon, the police engaged in a shootout with the suspect. He was identified as a 29-year-old man from Middletown, Delaware. Both the police and the suspect exchanged gunfires. The unnamed suspect was later found dead with a gunshot wound. His body was found hours later in a wooded area close to the scene of the shootout.

The authorities said it was not clear whether the suspect died of a self-inflicted injury or in the police firing.

No officers involved in the shooting were reported to be injured during the incident. The motive behind the slaying was unknown. The victims’ family was notified.

This was an ongoing investigation and no further details were available at the moment.

Crimes against elderly people have been reported earlier also. In a similar incident in April, an elderly woman was stabbed to death by her fiancé for removing her engagement ring and breaking off their engagement. The woman, identified as 64-year-old Gabrielle Gottlieb, suffered multiple stab wounds in her chest after her 63-year-old fiancé, John Foster, chased her and stabbed her inside a Wine Heaven store.

Foster then fled the scene and got on top of their apartment building and threatened to kill himself by jumping off the roof. He was later taken into custody.
