A terrifying video clip of an elephant attacking an SUV in South Africa and flipping it over while the vehicle was carrying a family with young children has gone viral on social media.

The incident occurred while the family with two kids was driving through iSimangaliso Wetland Park in the KwaZulu-Nata province of South Africa, New York Post reported.

The short video was filmed by fellow motorists who witnessed the enraged bull elephant charging at the vehicle attempting to turn it on its roof.

The video shows terrified onlookers honking in a desperate attempt to scare the elephant, while the unperturbed tusker continued to roll the vehicle. The elephant eventually pushes the vehicle off the road while the onlookers watch helplessly.

The driver of the vehicle from which the video was filmed could be heard telling a female co-passenger to "phone them" to which the woman replies: “I don’t know who to phone.”

According to reports, the family only suffered minor injuries in the attack but was left shocked by the incident. The photos of the incident posted on social media showed the car's windows and doors smashed in the attack.

"When you ignore that these are wild animals and underestimate what they can do," a viewer commented on the photos of the incident shared by Port Elizabeth Traffic Updates on their social media page.

"This elephant would've exhibited multiple signs of irritation and aggression before charging this car. It is important that we as humans educate ourselves prior to driving through wildlife areas," a user commented on the video posted by them.

"People need to be aware that these gentle giants can feel frightened or provoked. We don't know what this elephant has experienced, they have intelligence and very good memory...Humans must respect them and keep their distance from them," another said.

Meanwhile, the officials at the iSimangaliso Wetland Park said they will be investigating what has triggered the elephant to attack the vehicle.
