Emma Watson’s MTV Awards Acceptance Speech Gets Mixed Reactions
Emma Watson’s “Beauty and the Beast” is a blockbuster hit and apart from the movie’s success on the box office, it also gave the actress a new recognition.
Watson was one of the winners in the recently concluded MTV Movie and TV Awards. The “Harry Potter” star received the first gender-neutral acting prize for her role as Belle in the live-action “Beauty and the Beast,” The Guardian reported. The category featured prominent male and female actors including Hugh Jackman and James McAvoy.
Upon receiving the award, Watson gave an inspiring and beautiful message that left her fans and the listeners enlightened, per The Huffington Post. “MTV’s move to create a genderless award for acting will mean something different to everyone, but to me, it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes ― and that doesn’t need to be separated into two different categories. Empathy, and the ability to use your imagination should have no limits,” said “The Circle” star.

Watson added that the recognition she received was beyond her acting skills and was also related to Belle’s persona. In the film, her character is passionate and curious about learning new things. In the song titled “Belle” Watson’s character sang her heart out loud saying, “There must be more than this provincial life.” Unfortunately, the village was not supportive of her but she did not listen to them.
“I loved playing someone who didn’t listen to any of that,” said Watson. “I’m so proud to be a part of a film that celebrates diversity, literacy, inclusion, joy, and love the way that this one does.”
Watson’s message was effective because a number of netizens were moved by it. “I love @EmmaWatson. She's killing her acceptance speech. Such a beautiful soul that I inspire to learn from. #MTVAwards,” ayiiia wrote on Twitter. “Emma Watson is amazing, such a beautiful speech #MTVMovieAwards,” another user named Kassidy Slaughter wrote.
Although many were pleased some of the listeners were bored with Watson’s long speech. Many think that it was too lengthy for an MTV Award accepting speech.
“Emma Watson just gave a 7 minute speech accepting a MTV movie award for her weak ass performance as Belle like she was Meryl Streep,” Frasier wrote on Twitter. “i aged 43 years during emma watson's acceptance speech #MTVAwards.”
Another user even made a trivia out of Watson’s lengthy acceptance speech. “What was longer all of the Harry Potter movies or Emma Watson's Thank you speech? #MTVAwards.”
Although the public has a different take on Watson’s acceptance speech on MTV Movie and TV Awards, there is no doubt that her role in “Beauty and the Beast” gave her a great opportunity. In fact, there are speculations that she will surpass Jennifer Lawrence as the highest paid actress in Hollywood in 2017.
Also, last month, “Beauty and the Beast” was announced to be the highest grossing film worldwide. At the time of the report, the movie already surpassed the $1 billion global box office threshold. It paved way for the film to join the billion-dollar club that includes “The Avengers,” “Captain America: Civil War” and “Frozen” to name a few.
