Emmy Awards 2017 Snubs: ‘Gilmore Girls,’ ‘13 Reason Why’ And More Ignored
The Emmy nominations have finally arrived, and while plenty of fans are popping champagne, others can’t help but be disappointed. With hundreds of scripted shows on television, it’s inevitable that some will get snubbed. Here are the 2017 Emmy snubs we’re most upset about:
“Insecure” — HBO’s “Insecure” somehow didn’t score any nominations. The show, which follows Issa (Issa Rae) through life as insecure twenty-something, is hilarious and honest. The show is easily on par with the other nominees in the best comedy and best lead actress in a comedy categories, but it was snubbed.
“Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” — O.K., the ending is debatable, but Lauren Graham and Kelly Bishop turned in stellar performances for the “Gilmore Girls” revival. They definitely should’ve been nominated in the limited series categories for best lead actress and best supporting actress, respectively. They were ignored for seven seasons on The WB/CW, and it’s unfortunate that they’re still overlooked on Netflix.
“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” — Rachel Bloom’s genius should be acknowledged in one of the main categories, such as best comedy or best lead actress in a comedy. Unfortunately, the series only got one nomination for best original music and lyrics, a category that will be announced at the Creative Arts Emmys. It looks like the Emmys are keeping alive their tradition of snubbing The CW.

“American Gods” — After delivering a strong first season, it seemed like “American Gods” could be a competitor in a few of the main categories. Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane certainly delivered worthy performances. Gillian Anderson’s performance as the mutli-faced god of media should’ve earned her a guest actress nod. Even in the creative categories, a show so visually stunning could’ve racked up nominations. However, only the main title design and visual effects were honored.
“13 Reasons Why” — The Emmy voters were not fans of the controversial Netflix drama. Despite the controversy surrounding how the show handles teen suicide, it’s hard to deny the great performances. Katherine Langford delivered a breakthrough performance as Hannah, and Kate Walsh’s portrayal of a grieving mother is heartbreaking.
“The Good Place” — Kristen Bell and Ted Danson’s NBC comedy has a weird premise, following Bell’s character into the afterlife, but it’s surprisingly delightful and hilarious. It’s a shame that it was snubbed by the 2017 Emmys.

“I Love Dick” — Amazon didn’t seem to get acknowledged much at the 2017 Emmy nominations, and that’s unfortunate for this comedy. While Kathryn Hahn scored a nomination for “Transparent,” her hilarious role as a filmmaker who becomes obsessed with a charming professor named Dick (Kevin Bacon) was easily as good as the other actresses in the lead comedic actress category. It seems like the Television Academy didn’t look past the salacious title.
“Marvel’s Luke Cage” — It isn’t surprising that the Television Academy overlooked a genre show like “Luke Cage,” but it still stings. Mike Colter carried the Netflix/Marvel drama as the bulletproof superhero. His charisma makes it easy to root for Luke, and his performance carried the show through comedic and dramatic scenes. However, the Emmys don’t typically acknowledge superhero shows, so we shouldn’t be surprised that the only nod “Luke Cage” received was for stunts.
With peak TV in full effect, there are plenty of other shows that were snubbed too. “The Leftovers” and “The Americans” being left out of the best drama category are the most shocking, but former favorites like “Mr. Robot,” “Empire” and “Transparent” being mostly ignored is also a surprise.
