Mia Khalifa didn't forget to celebrate her home country Lebanon's Independence Day over the weekend despite being thousands of miles away.
On Sunday, the former porn star, 27, took to Instagram and shared a snap of a crowd of people carrying Lebanese flags as her way of commemorating the country's Independence Day. In the snap, one man is holding up a sign with a photo of a naked Khalifa wearing her infamous black-frame glasses and the flag of Lebanon.
"Happy Independence Day to my broken, beautiful country that will one day be truly independent from corruption and itself. Kilun ya’ane kilun," she wrote.
Lebanon celebrates its "Festival of the Independence" on Nov. 22, the anniversary of the date in 1943 when the nation proclaimed its autonomy after over two decades of French rule.
Khalifa's post received mixed responses from her followers. Some commented laughing emojis, while others left fire and heart emojis.
"We love you," one commented with two red heart emojis. "This is probably the best thing you have ever posted on your account," another wrote.
One Instagram user who goes by Officer Jerry appeared to be watching out for any hate comments in Khalifa's post, writing, "Oh, don't mind me. I'm just patrolling this comment section. (Make sure to tag me if you see any perpetrators)."
"@officerjerry this is so cute hahaha," Khalifa replied.
In September, Khalifa opened up about her home country when she sat down for a virtual interview with Mouin Ali Jaber and Medea Azouri in the "Sarde (After Dinner)" podcast.
During their conversation, Jaber asked Khalifa if she had hesitated to help Beirut following the devastating blast that rocked Lebanon in August considering that she had been "banned" from visiting her home country due to her stint in porn.
"Absolutely, not," Khalifa responded. "I think the tumultuousness of the relationship has been one-sided. I have never stopped loving Lebanon. I've never stopped identifying as Lebanese.”
Khalifa also admitted that she wanted to visit Lebanon every summer but was afraid to do so after she was informed that she wasn't welcome. But she assured everyone that she remains proud of her roots.
"No one can ever take that away from me. I was born there, I was raised there. It's my culture, it's my heritage, it's my lineage. I'm passing it on to my children there isn't a soul in the world that can stop me from doing that,” she added.
Khalifa earlier proved her love for Lebanon by spreading awareness regarding the crises her country was experiencing and donating to groups helping the victims of the Beirut blast. She wrote in one tweet immediately after the explosion three months ago, "Beirut, my heart is always with you."
In 2017, she also wished her fellow Lebanese a happy Independence Day. "Happy Independence Day to the country I love, but doesn’t really love me back #Lebanon," she on Twitter.
