In the finale episode, Father Tomas (Alfonso Herrera) and Father Marcus (Ben Daniels) got separated. The two exorcists have been working together since the first season of the hit Fox series.
While speaking with TV Line, Slater explained, “We knew going into this season that if we ended it in the same way, where the case is successful and the heroes emerge unscathed, and Marcus and Tomas walk off into the sunset together, arm in arm, it starts to feel like nothing matters. It starts to feel like every season kind of just resets back to the status quo, which I think is a mistake with serialized, long-form storytelling.”
Slater added that Season 1 was all about Marcus and Tomas meeting, and Season 2 centered on the two becoming brothers. But the people behind “The Exorcist” needed to shake things up a little bit to keep things fresh next season.
“What we felt was creatively right early on was to shake up that dynamic and to essentially separate them for at least part of the third season to really show how much they needed each other and to set them on two very different paths, and then to find an exciting way to bring those two paths back together,” he said.
Slater also stressed that even though Father Tomas and Father Marcus have been separated from each other, this set up won’t be permanent for the two characters. But while speaking with Deadline, Slater said that Season 3 will take place six months after the events that took place in Season 2.
Unfortunately, “The Exorcist” hasn’t received a Season 3 renewal so the rest of the characters’ stories will depend on the network’s decision. If the series will be renewed, it is expected to premiere in September 2018 and will introduce a slew of new characters.
