An 18-year-old boy in the U.K. who brutally killed a young father of two children will serve at least 19 years in prison after being found guilty of murder.

Byron Pollock, of Stevenage, England, was just 17 when he stabbed to death Christopher Hewett, 31, as the latter was walking to his sister's home at night on Feb. 12, the BBC reported.

Pollock was found guilty of murder in July, while a 15-year-old boy, who was not named in the report, was convicted of manslaughter. The latter will be sentenced next month.

On the day of the incident, Hewett and his cousin were on their way to visit their grandmother when they passed a group of four youths near shops in Stevenage. Prosecutor Paul Cavin said words were exchanged between Hewett and the teens.

Hewett and his cousin were near the front door of the former's sister's home when the group approached them from behind. The 15-year-old struck Hewett with a baseball bat. As the 31-year-old was grappling with the unnamed teen, Pollock came from behind and stabbed Hewett several times, before the group fled.

When the victim’s sister opened the door, she watched in horror as her brother bled to death while being held up by their cousin, the prosecutor said during the hearing in St. Albans Crown Court.

Hewett suffered a large wound to his side, and his cousin had tried to compress it. However, the young father was pronounced dead at the hospital roughly an hour after the attack.

Hewett and his cousin were visiting their grandmother that day as her death was said to be imminent. She passed away minutes after learning that her grandson had died.

Pollock had a previous conviction for grievous bodily harm with intent after he stabbed a man from behind outside a bar in Stevenage in December 2018. He served four years in a young offenders institute for the crime.

"The only view I can have [of] you is that you are an extremely dangerous young man," the judge stated.

The weapon used on Hewett could only be described as a "combat dagger" by the judge. He stressed that it was yet another example of what could go wrong if young men carried knives.

Pollock was told that the minimum term he would serve before he would be eligible for parole was 19 years.

The 15-year-old boy who struck Hewett with a bat was cleared of murder but was convicted of manslaughter. A third defendant, 20-year-old Ryan Lee, was sentenced to two years and eight months imprisonment for aiding Pollock and the 15-year-old.
