'Fast And Furious 9' Release Date Gets Delayed Again
The release date of action flick “Fast and Furious 9” has been pushed back once again. Fans of the franchise will have to wait till 2020 to see the continuing saga of Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his team.
“Fast and Furious 9” was originally supposed to be released in April 2019, before it was changed to April 2020. Now, Universal Pictures has announced the new release date of the film to be May 22, 2020, Variety reported.
The new release date means that the film will likely clash with the highly anticipated “Godzilla vs. Kong” crossover movie at the box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Since both films will be released on the same date, fans will have to choose between the action flick and the monster movie.
The eighth installment in Diesel’s franchise, titled “The Fate of the Furious,” grossed $1.2 billion worldwide. While this was a huge success, it still fell short of “Furious 7,” directed by James Wan, which grossed $1.5 billion at the global box office.
“Fast and Furious 9” will be directed by Justin Lin, who is a veteran of the franchise. Lin previously directed the 2009 flick “Fast and Furious,” “Fast and Furious 6” and “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.” The director is returning to this franchise after six years.
Details about the movie, such as when the production will actually commence, have not yet been announced. At the moment, the focus may be on the first spin-off movie of the franchise, “Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw.”
Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham will be reprising their respective roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw in the spin-off. This film has been directed by David Leitch, and it will be released on Aug. 2.
Meanwhile, the preliminary work for “Fast and Furious 9” appears to have started already. In an Instagram post earlier this month, Diesel teased that he and Lin worked together the whole weekend. Diesel also complimented the director for being passionate and committed to the franchise even though he has been a part of it for many years.
