Fat Joe Guilty: Rapper Admits He Didn't Pay Taxes For Two Years
Fat Joe has big problems after the rapper pleaded guilty to failing to file tax returns.
Uncle Sam says Fat Joe, real name Joseph Antonio Cartagena, owes more than $700,000 in taxes, the New York Post reported.
Fat Joe made the guilty plea in Newark federal court, where some of his businesses are located. The rapper is a resident of Miami Beach, Fla., and has property in New Jersey.
Following the guilty plea, Fat Joe’s attorney, Jeffrey Lichtman, said his client intends to make good on his tax debt.
"'Fat Joe' has taken responsibility for his tax failures. He hopes to repay his tax indebtedness," Lichtman said, according to the Post.
Over a two-year period, Fat Joe failed to pay taxes on $3 million in income, the Associated Press reported.
The rapper pleaded guilty to failing to pay taxes in 2007 and 2008, although the government contended that Fat Joe also didn’t pay taxes in 2009 and 2010, according to the AP.
In 2007, the rapper made $1.3 million from concerts and royalties. He made $1.4 million in 2008, the Post reported.
Fat Joe’s income has taken a hit since then, with a gross income of $320,000 in 2008 and $680,000 in 2010, officials told the paper.
The rapper had his bail set at $250,000, which he posted, the Post reported.
Fat Joe is scheduled to be sentenced April 3 and faces up to two years in prison, according to the paper. The AP reported that the government’s contention that he failed to pay taxes in 2009 and 2010 may factor into the sentencing.
