Father, 2 Kids Pulled Into Sea By Crashing Waves, Drown During Beach Trip [Video]
A 42-year-old man and his two young children drowned off a rocky coast in Oman as crashing waves pulled them into the sea.
The bodies of the man and his 6-year-old son were recovered while the search continued for his 9-year-old daughter, officials said.
Shashikant Mhamane, a man of Indian origin residing in the U.A.E. had traveled from Dubai to the neighboring country of Oman for a holiday with his wife and two children when the tragedy occurred, NDTV reported.
Officials said the family, along with other beach-goers, had crossed a safety barrier during a trip to Mughsayl Beach on Sunday.
A video shared on social media shows massive waves crashing into the coast as visitors crowding the beach seemed to have a good time.
A few seconds into the video, a huge wave sweeps off the rocks and Mhamane’s son, Shreyas, and his daughter, Shruti both are pulled into the sea by receding waters.
The father followed his children into the sea in a bid to save them but was met with a watery grave.
A family member said Wednesday that rescuers had managed to find the bodies of Shashikant and Shreyas while Shruti remains missing, The Times of India reported.
Shashikant and his two children were among at least five people involved in Sunday’s accident, as per the Times of Oman.
The father had shared photos of his trip on Facebook before the impending tragedy. Some social media users commented on his recent pictures.
“Praying that the news floating out is not true. And your whole family is safe,” one wrote while another added, “Just saw the horrific video floating online my deepest condolences to the family.”
An unrelated incident was reported earlier this year in February after 11 people were dragged by waves on a beach in Indonesia and drowned. The victims were part of a group of 24 people, 23 of whom were holding hands and meditating on Payangan beach a little after midnight. Huge tidal waves pulled members of the group into the water as they were meditating. The bodies of the 11 victims were retrieved while the remaining 13 members of the group, including a toddler, survived the incident.
