Fauci Concerned With Majority Of Those Receiving COVID-19 Vaccine Being White
With COVID-19 vaccines becoming more readily available, Dr. Anthony Fauci has become more concerned with the majority of those receiving the vaccine being in the white community and the minority communities being left out.
The racial disparities with those receiving the jab are “very disturbing” according to Dr. Fauci. Minority communities are falling behind on being protected while many white communities aren’t having nearly as many issues.
When comparing those in Black or African-American communities to those in white communities, they’re about three times more likely to be hospitalized if they contract the virus and two times more likely to succumb to their illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
He’s explained that those in non-white majority communities have a harder time having the opportunity to receive the vaccine because of “understandable vaccine hesitancy” and not having enough access to it as well, according to the Hill.
“We’ve got to really extend ourselves in the community to get the access to minority populations that they don’t have,” Fauci said.
To help with these issues, President Joe Biden has already set up more centers to get vaccinated in minority communities. Dr. Fauci has also given tips on how to help the African American and Latino populations not be so hesitant.
“You’ve got to say, 'Look, we respect your concern, but these are the two or three reasons why you really need to get vaccinated. For your own health, for the health of your community and literally for the health of the entire nation',” he said.
Around 13% of the U.S. population has been vaccinated since distribution began in December. Over 1.9 million doses are given a day all over the country, the CDC reports.
