Fire Breaks Out At Home After Television Explodes, Elderly Woman Escapes Unhurt

Fire broke out at a home after a television exploded inside the residence. The incident took place in Kottayam, a city in the southern Indian state of Kerala, on Wednesday.

An elderly woman, identified as Lailamani, was watching television around 7.30 p.m. local time (10 a.m. EDT) when she noticed smoke coming from the switchboard near the electronic device. When the smoke filled the room, Lailamani, who was the only person inside the home, rushed out to save her life and alert the neighbors. As soon as the woman stepped out of the residence, the television exploded, local daily Samayam reported.

By the time the neighbors arrived at the scene, the fire had engulfed the room. Locals immediately began dousing the blaze using a water pump. A while later, the fire was contained. The residents then entered the home and found the fire had burnt the furniture in the room and clothes inside the cupboard.

Nobody was injured in the incident. Investigation was ongoing and the cause of the fire was not known.

The incident comes months after a television explosion in the Indian state of Odisha killed a woman. The victim, her husband and their 6-month-old baby were watching television when the device exploded following an electrical short circuit. Neighbors rushed to the scene and found the trio with critical injuries. The neighbors immediately alerted the police. While the woman died on the way to the hospital, her husband and child were hospitalized in critical condition.

In another incident in Ireland, a man died after a television caught fire and exploded at his home. The 60-year-old unidentified man was watching television when the device suddenly caught fire and exploded. Fearing that the entire home would be engulfed in blaze, the man, who was a farmer, dragged the device onto the road. He alerted the neighbors but collapsed moments later. He was rushed to the hospital where he died two days later.
