Samsung's first Galaxy smartphone with Nvidia's dual-core processor officially debuted Wednesday.

Dubbed the Samsung Galaxy R, the Android 2.3 Gingerbread device is powered by Nvidia's Tegra 2 dual-core processor. Though the same chipset can be found in the Galaxy Tab 10.1, this is the first Galaxy smartphone to feature Nvidia's processor.

Samsung's previous smartphone models, such as the Galaxy S 4G and Epic 4G, used its own 1GHz Hummingbird Cortex A8 processor.

Compared to the first generation Galaxy, however, the R is an impressive update. With the dual-core goodness and GeForce GPU, users of the Galaxy R can enjoy faster Web browsing, better multitasking, and smoother game performance. The smartphone can also play back 1080p HD video, though video capture is currently limited to 720p HD. Other features of the handset include a 4.19-inch WVGA (800x480) Super Clear LCD and 8GB of internal memory.

For now, the phone is available only in Sweden, with North American and Asian releases to come soon. The company hasn't provided price details, but given the mid-level specs and the looming release of the S2, it's probably safe to say that the Galaxy R won't cost over $200, wrote Wired.com's Mike Isaac.
