Five Fights That Could Take Place At ONE Championship's 10th Anniversary Event
KEY POINTS
- Adriano Moraes' rematch with Demetrious Johnson could be a fitting main event for ONE Championship's 10th anniversary
- Angela Lee could make her return to face the Atomweight World Grand Prix winner
- Christian Lee could face Eddie Alvarez at the same event
ONE Championship is planning its "biggest event in history" for its 10th-anniversary show, according to company CEO Chatri Sityodtong in an interview with International Business Times earlier this year.
Established in 2011, ONE Championship has grown into one of the biggest combat sports organizations in the world.
"You've read my mind. Yes, we plan to hold a special event later this year to celebrate our 10th year in the industry," Sityodtong said. "It's going to be massive."
ONE Championship is known to put together these mega shows featuring its biggest stars.
In 2019, the promotion held its “A New Era” and “Century” events in Tokyo, Japan.
In April of this year, the Singapore-based organization came out with its “ONE on TNT” series, which aired on primetime in the United States.
Fans expect ONE Championship’s 10th-anniversary show to be even bigger, packed with even more star power.
Here are five bouts most fans want to see on that card.
Christian Lee vs. Eddie Alvarez
Eddie Alvarez came to ONE Championship in 2019 with a single goal on his mind, and that was to be the only man in history to have worn all three major world titles.
However, at 37 years of age, Alvarez is nowhere near the top five of ONE Championship's lightweight rankings after going 1-2- with one no contest.
Still, a showdown with reigning lightweight champion Christian Lee is an interesting proposition.
Alvarez took shots at Lee earlier this year, calling him out in a social media tirade.
It responded by saying he didn’t feel Alvarez deserves a shot at the belt, but the 23-year-old champ stressed that he is willing to give him one if the top brass wanted it.
Does Alvarez deserve a shot at the title at this point? Probably not.
But it would still be a fun fight regardless, and fans from Asia and the United States would no doubt tune in.
Demetrious Johnson vs. Adriano Moraes II
You can argue that Adriano Moraes’ April knockout victory over Demetrious Johnson was fortuitous.
The current flyweight kingpin stopped Johnson with a knee to the face while he was grounded, which is a legal move in ONE Championship but illegal in the UFC.
“Mighty Mouse” may not have expected the shot that rendered him unconscious for the first time in his career.
Fans are willing to give Johnson the benefit of the doubt, and an immediate rematch with Moraes is more than warranted.
Johnson is, after all, widely considered the greatest MMA fighter of all time. If anyone deserves a rematch after that first fight, it’s him.
Make no mistake about it though, Moraes is the real deal. He’s dominated ONE Championship's flyweight bracket for a long time.
A second encounter is necessary to erase all doubt for both men.
Bibiano Fernandes vs. John Lineker
ONE Championship has a banger of a bantamweight rivalry on its hands as Brazilian superstars Bibiano Fernandes and John Lineker are destined to face each other in the Circle.
After “Hands of Stone” joined ONE Championship in 2019, the hard-hitting knockout artist has been on a collision course with “The Flash.”
Fernandes is ONE Championship’s longtime bantamweight champion. Meanwhile, Lineker has certainly established himself as the No. 1 contender for the belt.
It’s only a matter of time before these two guys throw down, and ONE Championship’s anniversary show could be where it happens.
Reece McLaren and Kevin Belingon have hurt Fernandes in the past, which makes Lineker’s dynamite power a legitimate threat.
But Fernandes has proven he can overcome any adversity. It’s an interesting matchup by any means.
Angela Lee vs. Winner of Atomweight Grand Prix
Angela Lee became the youngest fighter in history to win a world title in MMA when she defeated Mei Yamaguchi in 2016.
“Unstoppable” has been on an incredible run and is today one of the biggest stars in the Asian promotion.
Earlier this year, Lee welcomed daughter Ava Marie to the world, her first child with husband Bruno Pucci--who is also an MMA fighter.
She has been on mom duty since then. It has also caused her to take a step away from active competition to focus on her child.
ONE Championship put together an Atomweight World Grand Prix tournament, featuring eight of the best atomweights to determine the next challenger to Lee’s trinket.
Lee is already back in training now preparing for her return. That could happen on ONE Championship’s anniversary show.
Thanh Le vs. Garry Tonon
Last but certainly not least is a featherweight showdown between newly-crowned featherweight champion Thanh Le and grappling superstar Garry Tonon.
Le lifted the strap from longtime titleholder Martin Nguyen last year in a spectacular performance.
Meanwhile, Tonon has been absolutely incredible since embarking on his MMA career in 2018.
“The Lion Killer” has won all six of his fights, which include two by knockout and three by submission.
The two men have beaten similar foes and are currently left with no one else to face but each other.
It’s the fight that makes the most sense for either man, and fans believe the showdown is imminent.
It could happen on ONE Championship’s anniversary show.
