At the end of Season 3, episode 20 of “The Flash,” Barry (Grant Gustin) finally figured out that Savitar is actually a version of himself from the future. Surprisingly, the big reveal didn’t shock Barry that much, but it seems that the same cannot be said for Iris (Candice Patton), Cisco (Carlos Valdes) and Joe (Jesse L. Martin) who have yet to learn the big bad’s real identity.

“Watching Jesse L. Martin, Candice Patton, Carlos Valdes — watching all of their reactions and interactions with Savitar when he’s out of the suit, it feels so fresh and exciting for us,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg teased during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Kreisberg said that though they wrote the characters’ reactions in the episode script, seeing the actors perform what was written was a totally different experience. “What’s interesting about people’s reactions — we certainly wrote it, but just the way the cast performs it — is it’s one thing to have seen that giant metal suit and hear that there is a version of Barry inside of it,” Kreisberg said. “It’s quite another thing when you actually come face-to-face with what’s inside.”

Kreisberg added that the reactions of Team Flash members to Savitar’s identity are a “mixture of both horror and sadness.” “His visage is obviously very upsetting — seeing the scar and the milky white eye, but also seeing the person that you love be so twisted,” the exec producer said. “Barry Allen, who probably has the gentlest soul of all of the characters in the Arrowverse, to just see how far he could fall, he’s both terrifying, but it’s also heartbreaking.”

It’s unclear when the rest of Team Flash will meet Savitar out of his suit for the first time. But in the recently released sizzle reel for Season 3 of the series, Joe is seen trying to appeal to the villain’s emotions as his former adoptive father. “You were my son once. Please, Barry,” Joe tells Savitar as the police detective seemingly asks the big bad to spare Iris’ life.

Also in the sizzle reel, Joe tells Barry what he thinks of Savitar after meeting him for the first time. “You know what I saw when I looked at that man’s eyes? A deeply wounded soul,” Joe tells Barry. “I saw the same thing in you the night your mother was killed.”

Meanwhile, in tonight’s Season 3, episode 21, Cisco figures out a way to potentially stop Savitar from remembering everything that Barry does. “What if Barry can’t remember what we’re doing now?” Cisco asks the team in the trailer for the episode.

“You will mess with his brain?” Joe asks.

“Just a little bit,” Cisco replies, before telling Barry that he wants to stop him from making new memories.

Barry agrees with the plan, but the result isn’t something they expect. “Who are all you?” asks Barry after Cisco does something to his friend’s brain. “Where the hell am I? Is this a dentist office?”

Can Cisco reverse Barry’s memory loss? Find out in tonight’s episode, titled “Cause and Effect,” airing tonight at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
