Flight Attendant Accepts Marriage Proposal Mid-Air, Gets Fired For 'Neglecting Passenger Safety'
A China Eastern Airlines flight attendant lost her job recently, months after accepting a mid-air marriage proposal as it was "extremely irresponsible for the safety of passengers."
In May this year, a video of an unnamed man proposing to his flight attendant girlfriend mid-flight had gone viral and created quite a buzz on social media The flight attendant’s boyfriend went down on one knee and popped the question roughly 30-minutes after the flight took off on May 10.
The clip shows the teary-eyed lass speaking to the passengers through the inflight announcement system. "I really didn't know my boyfriend will be proposing to me on this flight, thanks for being my witnesses,” she said, Asia One reported.
A voiceover in the clip — believed to be of a passenger — said everyone on the flight was touched by the gesture. Some passengers were also seen taking out their phones to record the special moment.
However, this did not go down too well with the airlines. The airlines said the “private romantic behaviour caused turmoil among passengers and was extremely irresponsible for the safety and security of the passengers.” She was fired Sept. 10 on grounds of neglecting passenger safety, Channel 8 reported.
According to local reports, the airlines' action received a mixed response from people. While some objected to the airline's overly-strict and "heartless" move more so because the woman did not know about her boyfriend’s plans, others feel the staff should not "play private activities" during working hours, especially when the job deals with public safety.
In another incident last month, a British Airways flight attendant was suspended after a video surfaced showing her in uniform peeling off her tights — and sniffing them.
In the bizarre video, the attendant can be seen holding the tights and two pairs of shoes to her nose and saying “I wish you could smell this.” She then says, “Don’t look at how rough I look after the flight. So you want me to smell my shoes and my tights? Well, first of all, I’ve got to take the tights off.” She then slides them down her legs and says “These I’ve been wearing all day, with no knickers, just for you.”
“We hold our colleagues to very high standards and expect them to behave responsibly. When this doesn’t happen we will always take the appropriate action,” a spokesperson for the airlines said, Independent reported.
