Florida Woman Adds Alcohol To Baby's Feeding Bottle During Party; Arrested
A 28-year-old woman was accused of slipping alcohol into a baby's feeding bottle and making the child fall ill. Cecil LaToya Bryant was arrested in Pensacola, Florida after the baby was found to have a blood alcohol level of .142.
The incident occurred at a Halloween party on Oct. 31, WKRG reported Monday.
A woman who threw the party called the police after realizing what Bryant had allegedly done. She spoke to deputies and said several people, including Bryant, were at the house for the party, and many helped take care of the kids.
The woman also told cops that she had been cooking all evening and, at some point, went to take a bath. Bryant prepared the feeding bottles for the children during this time, the woman said.
While she was feeding the baby later, the woman noticed the smell of watermelon from the child's mouth, according to WEAR ABC 3 News.
She inspected the contents of the bottle and realized it had "the odor of watermelon alcohol," the report said.
After taking a sip, the woman said it tasted like watermelon Smirnoff. She also noticed the child felt sick, drifted in and out of sleep, and began throwing up after consuming the contents of the bottle.
Deputies were alerted and responded to the possible child abuse case on Nov. 1.
An investigator with the Department of Children and Family Services was at the scene and told the responding cops that the baby had a blood alcohol level of .142.
Surveillance footage from the living room captured Bryant with a baby bottle and returning from the kitchen. She was seen "shaking a liquid in the bottle as if to mix formula," according to the arrest report.
Bryant then handed the bottle over to the woman, who went on to feed the child shortly before the incident came to light.
Deputies also inspected the bottle in question and felt it "emanated a watermelon alcohol smell."
After a report showed the .142 blood toxicology result, a nurse got in touch with Poison Control to find out what blood alcohol level is considered dangerous for the baby.
The nurse was notified that a blood alcohol range between .05 to .075 is of concern for an adolescent.
The nurse handed the report to deputies and said the victim was exposed to the possibility of severe toxicity due to a level of .142 blood alcohol level. The child's breathing and mental status could have been affected, the nurse added.
The baby was kept under observation and monitored at the hospital. Bryant was arrested Friday and charged with aggravated child abuse.
She "knowingly and willfully performed an intentional act that could reasonably be expected to cause great bodily harm or permanent disability/disfigurement to [the baby]," the arrest report read.
