Florida Woman Fatally Struck By Car After Argument With The Driver Over Parking Space
Authorities in Florida are on the lookout for a man who fatally struck a woman with his car after they had a dispute over a parking spot. Cops released the footage in an attempt to locate the unidentified man.
The footage released Tuesday by the Hialeah Police Department showed the dark-colored Toyota Corolla hit Olga Fernandez, 57, on Feb. 13., NBC News reported. The woman was run over just feet from her home at 400 West 1st Ave., in Hialeah, a little after 3:30 a.m. ET.
Hialeah Police Lt. Eddie Rodriguez said the moment of impact was captured on surveillance video. "You can see in the video, the taillights of the vehicle start, they turn on, and the vehicle goes straight at Ms. Fernandez, striking her and dragging her for several feet," Rodriguez told 7 News Miami.
"The daughter of the victim came home that night and found a vehicle parked in her parking spot," said Rodriguez. "She went upstairs, she told her mother. Ms. Fernandez went outside and somehow confronted the person inside that vehicle."
Hialeah Fire Rescue units responded and attempted to resuscitate the victim but failed. "She unfortunately died," said Rodriguez. Fernandez was taken to a hospital after the incident but did not make it.
"We have no information on the driver whatsoever," Rodriguez said. The vehicle they're looking for is likely on the front. "We’re looking for the subject vehicle, we’re looking for the person driving the car. We need the public’s help now. We need to help find closure for the Fernandez family," Rodriguez added.
Neighbors said the woman worked at a gas station across from their apartment. Fernandez's friend Ileana Ajo told NBC Miami that the car arrived outside Fernandez's residence and she went outside to check who the driver was.
One of Fernandez’s children "can’t close her eyes because she sees her mother on the floor bleeding from her mouth, saying, ‘I can’t breathe," Ajo told NBC Miami.
"I don’t know what could have possibly been said in that confrontation to lead this person to decide to put their car in driver and take someone's life like that," Rodriguez told Local 10.
