Floyd Mayweather Sr. and MP Promotions adviser Sean Gibbons addressed Floyd Mayweather Jr. rematch talks with Manny Pacquiao and Conor McGregor.
It has been a couple of months since Mayweather announced his much awaited return. As expected, talks of a couple of grand rematches immediately emerged including one with Pacquiao and one with UFC star McGregor. Despite numerous reports about the possibility of the said rematches, Mayweather himself has yet to confirm either of the two.
However, Gibbons of Pacquiao’s MP Promotions recently shed light to the issue and stated that Mayweather has not ruled out further talks with Pacquiao over a potential money-spinning bout.
Recent reports stating Pacquiao was no longer interested in the said rematch has now been denied by Gibbons. The MP Promotions President has emphasized he was recently misquoted about his past comments about Mayweather.
“That was printed wrong,” Gibbons exclusively told World Boxing News.
Gibbons clarified that what he was told about Mayweather doesn’t speak for the undefeated champ. In the end, it will all boil down on what Mayweather really wants to do and urged reporters to “call Floyd.”
“What I said was, ‘Floyd said he is coming back. Floyd has said I am retired’. But it’s up to Floyd so people need to call Floyd,” Gibbons explained.
As for a potential fight with former UFC champ McGregor, Gibbons has already stated that if “The Notorious” wants a real fight, he just have to reach out to him.
Meanwhile, Mayweather Sr. recently commented on both Mayweather vs. Pacquiao and Mayweather vs. McGregor rematches. In an interview with Elie Seckbach of EsNews, Mayweather Sr. was asked if McGregor now has a chance against his son. The elder Mayweather simply responded “You already know” which certainly means his son will beat the UFC star once again.
When asked about the possibility of a Mayweather rematch with Pacquiao and if the Filipino legend can finally beat his son, the legendary trainer simply responded “No.”
Aside from Pacquiao and Mayweather, McGregor is also linked to welterweight boxing champ Terrence Crawford. McGregor’s manager, Audie Attar finally spoke about the issue and said that he “respects Crawford” for wanting to fight McGregor. Though Attar likes the idea, he wants to know how serious Crawford is about it.
“I respect Terrence (Crawford) for being willing to do that (MMA fight with McGregor). If he’s really willing to do that, ask not just Bob Arum (who has been) promoting it. I think that’s great,” Attar said.
