Former NFL Top Rookie Decides To Stick With Arizona Cardinals Until 2028
KEY POINTS
- Kyler Murray agrees to a long-term deal that will keep him in Arizona until 2028
- The Cardinals are leaning on Murray's tandem with Kliff Kingsbury next season
- Murray is now the second-highest paid quarterback
Kyler Murray just got his wish as he reportedly inked a contract extension that will keep him in Arizona for a long time.
The top pick of the 2019 NFL Draft agreed to a five-year deal that would pay him a total of $230.5 million with $160 million guaranteed according to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones.
The new deal was also confirmed by the Cardinals, who now have a lock on the 24-year-old Texas native until 2028.
It also means that Murray will become the second-highest paid quarterback annually behind Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers.
Murray’s new massive contract likewise means he will be receiving a better financial package compared to the troubled Deshaun Watson of the Cleveland Browns.
However, the difference is that the three-time Pro Bowler’s contract is fully guaranteed.
Murray will receive $30 million in the first year, $68 million over the first two years, and $106.15 million over the first three years of his new deal.
Before the contract extension came out, the 2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year was set to earn $965,000 in salary for the 2022 NFL season.
That would have paled considerably compared to what other top quarterbacks such as Watson, Josh Allen, Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes and Derek Carr would earn.
After being selected first in 2019, Murray reunited with former coach Kliff Kingsbury.
The partnership proved effective with the Cardinals becoming contenders in the NFC West.
But despite their efforts, questions remained in the air–especially their shortcomings in the postseason.
Regardless, the new deal means that Arizona is keeping the faith in both Kingsbury and Murray.
Given that Murray is seen to stay with the Cardinals until 2028, the same could hold for Kingsbury. This is unless Arizona flutters in the coming NFL seasons.
As far as Murray is concerned, the top priority for the former Heisman Trophy winner is to deliver a Super Bowl to the Cardinals.
"I wanna win Super Bowls with the Cardinals, AZ is home," Murray previously put up on social media.
In the three seasons that he has played for the Cardinals, Murray has put up a combined record of 22-23-1, having thrown for 11,480 yards and 70 touchdowns to 34 interceptions while also adding 314 career rushing yards and 20 career rushing touchdowns.
