KEY POINTS

  • Deshaun Watson could miss the entire 2022-23 NFL season amid sexual misconduct allegations against him
  • Watson and the NFL Players Association reportedly plan to fight the suspension if it is handed down
  • The Browns are in a spot and may have to find ways to mend their relationship with Baker Mayfield

Deshaun Watson has reached settlements with 20 of the 24 women who have filed sexual misconduct lawsuits against him, but the Cleveland Browns quarterback is still expected to face sanctions from the NFL, according to a report.

The NFL is pushing for an indefinite suspension of Watson, Andrew Beaton of the Wall Street Journal reported. It could last no shorter than a year for the 26-year-old quarterback. International Business Times could not independently verify this information.

Watson is expected to fight the suspension with the help of the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) once the decision is handed down They plan to use treatment against multiple team owners who allegedly have violated of the league's Personal Conduct Policy as their case, NBC Sports reported.

Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder, Patriots owner Robert Kraft, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones could be used as examples for lesser punishments when discussing sexual misconduct throughout the league.

As for the move to push for an indefinite suspension, it is seen as something to protect the league against the possibility that more women will come forward and file lawsuits against Watson through the middle of March next year.

All relevant two-year statutes of limitations will expire in March 2023. This is with the assumption that the 2020 NFL passing yards leader stopped securing private massages via social media after the first lawsuit was filed in March 2021.

Watson’s disciplinary hearing before Judge Sue L. Robinson is reportedly set to begin Tuesday. It is unclear how long the process will take.

A decision could come out as early as a week, according to ESPN.

The Browns open training camp on July 22 for rookies, while veterans would follow on July 26. Hence, the Browns could end up needing a regular quarterback to lead them.

Baker Mayfield is still around, but the 27-year-old is seeking a trade after Watson’s arrival.

There are multiple teams linked to Mayfield, including the Seattle Seahawks and the Carolina Panthers. However, nothing has gone beyond the rumor mill as of this writing.
