A 10-month-old baby died after her foster mother allegedly dropped her, leaving the toddler in an unresponsive state. The baby, identified as Skyla Giller, underwent an emergency brain surgery but did not survive, Daily Mail reported Sunday.

The baby's birth mother, Sarah Giller, was informed about the incident and was called to the hospital to give her consent to take Skyla off life support.

The incident took place late last month when paramedics were called to a village near Huddersfield, United Kingdom. Skyla was taken to Leeds General Infirmary following the incident.

"I thought my baby would be safe in foster care," the 30-year-old mother of four told the U.K. tabloid. "They are the sort of people who should be able to look after her. They failed my daughter and social services put my daughter in danger." Giller, who was heartbroken following her daughter's death, let the foster parents witness Skyla's final moments.

"I wanted them to see what they had done," she said. "I was laid beside Skyla, stroking her head and holding her hand. It was only a matter of minutes before she died."

Giller added: "I was absolutely devastated and all I could do was hold my daughter and keep things as peaceful as possible for Skyla's sake."

The birth mother was reportedly informed about happened to her baby by a social worker who told her that Skyla "had been taken to hospital and was extremely poorly."

"It was devastating," Giller reportedly said. "There were wires and things coming out of her head, nose and mouth with a huge cut on her head where they had done brain surgery."

Photos of Skyla after her surgery were released by Giller because she thought the hospital authorities would cover up the tragedy.

The West Yorkshire Police are reportedly investigating the incident. No arrests had been made in the incident and officials at Wakefield social services department were also informed.

Skyla was born eight weeks prematurely in Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, last October, and remained in the hospital for two weeks but was said to have been healthy.

During the interview with Daily Mail, Giller said she had contested a social services application to send Skyla into care but a judge ruled against her.

"Our relationship was really close and I saw her every day of the week," she said. "I was given false hope by social workers who indicated she would be able to come home at some point."

In April, Giller was asked not to see Skyla due to her troubled personal history.

Earlier this year, in the United States, a foster mother was arrested in the case of the death of a 17-year-old boy who suffered head injuries weeks after he was adopted.

Latamara Stackhouse Flythe was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse in the death of Aedyn Agminalis, who died Dec. 11, 2016. Doctors had found signs of trauma after he was brought to the hospital in an unresponsive state.

It is unclear if the foster mother in the latest case will be arrested or face any charges.
