Fox News Cameraman Killed In Ukraine, Second Journalist Working For US Media Killed Covering War
A Fox News cameraman was killed Monday while covering the Russia-Ukraine war, according to the network's CEO Suzanne Scott.
Pierre Zakrzewski, 55, was in a vehicle that was struck by incoming fire outside of Kyiv, Ukraine. He was in the vehicle with TV reporter Benjamin Hall, who was hospitalized.
“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we share the news this morning regarding our beloved cameraman Pierre Zakrzewski,” Scott said Tuesday in a note to employees. “Pierre was a war zone photographer who covered nearly every international story for FOX News from Iraq to Afghanistan to Syria during his long tenure with us.”
“Please keep them all in your prayers. And please continue to pray for Benjamin Hall,” Scott said.
Fox News has not disclosed details about Hall's condition.
Zakrzewski is the third journalist confirmed to be killed in Ukraine and the second from U.S. media. On Sunday, journalist and filmmaker Brett Renaud, 50, was shot and killed by Russian forces in the Kyiv suburb of Irpin.
Photojournalist Yevhenii Sakun was killed while working for a Spanish news agency when the Kyiv TV Tower was bombed. The cause of death for both Renaud and Sakun was “crossfire,” according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
“Pierre was a constant in all of our international coverage. I, like countless others, always felt an extra sense of reassurance when arriving on the scene and seeing him with camera in hand,” said Fox News President and executive editor Jay Wallace. “The legacy of his positive spirit, boundless energy, and eye for the story will carry on.”
The recent incidents highlight the dangers for war correspondents, many of whom are independent contractors and often underpaid or otherwise under-compensated.
If you are a TV/Radio producer who is asking an independent reporter in a war zone to broadcast free for you (ME), you need to pay attention to this thread because I hope it will help you help others.
