A 71-year-old woman who got her second dose of the vaccine in August has died of COVID-19 after being on life support for days with no improvement. It is believed that she contracted the virus during a morning walk.
Doctors said the patient, who was a resident of the Indian city of Gurugram, had her second dose of the Covishield AstraZeneca vaccine on Aug. 24, reported The Times Of India.
The woman was admitted to a private hospital on Nov. 10 after she began experiencing breathlessness, high fever and cough. She then got tested for COVID-19, the results of which came back positive.
The patient had comorbidities, including asthma, diabetes and hypertension. She also had a history of a heart ailment. Her condition was stable in the first few days after she was provided with IV fluids, antibiotics and oxygen support. However, it worsened not long after.
She was later moved to the ICU, where she was intubated and kept on a mechanical ventilator. She was on inotropic support afterward. Unfortunately, she soon succumbed to cardiac arrest.
"She used to go for morning walks and might have contracted COVID from someone outside," a doctor reportedly said, adding that all the patient's contacts tested negative.
This marks the second COVID-19 death reported from the city of Gurugram after a long gap of three months, according to Hindustan Times. After the city reported 80 active COVID-19 cases, district authorities declared three residential areas as containment zones Thursday.
The new situation has prompted authorities to warn people, particularly those who are old and have comorbidities, to avoid stepping out.
"Our teams are calling people who are in home isolation to check their condition. Even people who are fully vaccinated need to follow all Covid protocols," Gurugram Chief Medical Officer Virender Yadav told The Times Of India.
He also noted that people whose lungs and hearts are already compromised should stay indoors as the weather is extreme these days.
Earlier this week, a 71-year-old man succumbed to the infection in Gurugram despite being vaccinated. The man, who had comorbidities such as hypertension and coronary artery disease, received his second shot of the vaccine around five months ago. The patient reportedly had a high fever, cough and breathing distress. Though he was given intravenous fluids, oxygen support, remdesivir and other steroids, he soon suffered a cardiac arrest.
