‘Game Of Thrones’ Blooper: Fans React To Coffee Cup Mistake
“Game of Thrones” Season 8, episode 4 included one big mistake. No, this isn’t about Daenerys’ decision to take King’s Landing right away. It seems someone forgot to move a coffee cup out of a shot during the episode.
Part of the episode, which aired Sunday, takes place in the Great Hall as Winterfell celebrates killing the Night King. There’s a lot going on, so it’s an easy blooper to miss. Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) is praising Jon Snow (Kit Harington) for his bravery and calls him a king. The focus is on Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) reaction to people hailing Jon.
The camera shows Jon with Daenerys in the background, and that’s when the coffee cup shows up at the 17:38 mark. It’s only seen for a couple of seconds, but it’s clearly a modern day coffee cup with a white lid and cardboard sleeve. It’s definitely out of place among the medieval-inspired set of “Game of Thrones.”
Fans were shocked and entertained to see such a gaffe actually air on HBO. Most “GoT” viewers seem to be having a good laugh about it.
“Game of Thrones” isn’t the first period show to let a modern-day item slip into the background. “Downton Abbey” once released promotional photos with a plastic water bottle in the background. When fans noticed the mistake, it quickly went viral and editors photoshopped the beverage out of the image.
While this blooper is very much real, the HBO drama has previously been part of hoaxes like this. There is a photo of Jamie Lannister holding a coffee cup with the hand that was supposed to be missing, which fans often mistake for a blooper. However, it was a behind-the-scenes rehearsal photo, not something that actually made it to air. Similarly, a truck was spotted in the background of a screenshot from 2017, but it turned out to again be from a behind-the-scenes video.
HBO has not yet addressed the issue, but it’s likely that the coffee cup will be edited out for the DVD.
