KEY POINTS

  • Gareth Bale earned $4.7 million per goal this season
  • He owns a bar and an esports company
  • Bale's Real Madrid exit is expected in the offseason

Gareth Bale earned $19 million despite scoring only four goals. This means he earned at least $3 million every time he found the back of the net for Real Madrid this season.

Bale signed an extension in 2016 that would see him play in the Spanish capital until 2022. He played for the Tottenham Hotspurs in the Premier League before suiting up for the Los Blancos in 2013. He won virtually every major tournament in Spain including four Champions League trophies, two La Liga titles and three Club World Cups. But now, the star is frozen on the bench and his future remains uncertain.

The outcast star has not been featured in any Real Madrid games since the league resumed. Reports of a rift with manager Zinedine Zidane surfaced despite the two denying it. However, the Welsh player was not even present on the bench during the team’s last La Liga game against Leganes where substitutes were featured in lieu of starting regulars.

His agent Jonathan Barnett claims Bale will see the end of his contract despite limited or no football action at all, per Football Espana. A transfer is also possible but with the pandemic affecting the finances of teams and with the 30-year-old’s massive contract, it could scare teams away. There might be a way but only if Bale is willing to take a pay cut for this transfer and from the looks of things, the Welsh national team player will stay put amid mounting frustrations from fans.

He earned $19 million this season, on top of $5.5 million from endorsements. This ranks him on the 73rd spot on the list of highest paid athletes this year from Forbes. He earned more than teammate and club captain Sergio Ramos, who received $18.8 million this season.

When compared to other attacking forwards, Bale’s salary per goal seems massive because he only scored four goals for his side in La Liga. Lionel Messi is the cash king in Spain with $1.5 million salary per week. But with a total tally of 25 goals and 21 assists this season, his performance justifies the massive salary.

Aside from football, golf occupies much of Bale’s life. He regularly posts videos of him golfing during the lockdown. He has a golf course customized in his back garden in South Wales, and he has revealed plans to join tours once his career is over.

The striker owns an esports company called Ellevens Esports and a bar, and he counts Adidas as one of his longtime sponsors. He made $5.5 million off endorsement deals in 2020. Moreover, Bale drives fancy cars such as a Lamborghini Huracan, a white Range Rover, a Mercedes Class C63 AMG Coupé and a Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS Gullwing.
