George Clooney’s wife Amal criticized Donald Trump for inspiring other leaders to silence the press.

Amal, the U.K. government’s special envoy on media freedom, criticized the president of the United States again as she admitted that her efforts to combat media repression became “pretty bleak.” The human rights lawyer told The Guardian that simple arguments about the genocide accountability should have been easy to win at the UN security council, but it had fallen foul of UN division. She believes that Trump has something to do with it.

“At the same time some of the language used about journalists by authoritarian leaders is inspired by the language that came from the U.S. president,” Amal said during the interview.

According to Harper’s Bazaar, Trump branded criticisms toward his policies or actions “fake news” and called journalists “dishonest, terrible people.” He also said that the media is an “enemy of the people.”

Amal acknowledged that the current state of global media suppression would make things difficult for the Foreign Office. Thus, they want to target anyone throwing journalists in jail or shutting down the internet. Clooney proposed sanctions against individuals including ministers who abuse human rights such as the right to freedom of expression.

“If world leaders are becoming more united and more innovative in finding ways to silence the press, shouldn’t we as defenders of the press do the same,” Clooney said.

“All I can do as a human rights lawyer is keep trying to move an issue further up the to-do list and keep pushing so where a country is wavering they are more likely to do something than not. But yes, it is a pretty bleak landscape when it comes to accountability for human rights abuses.”

This isn’t the first time Amal criticized Trump. In 2018, she called out Trump for labeling the press the “enemy of the people.” She also referenced the torture and death of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Instanbul, Vanity Fair pointed out.
