Filmmaker George Miller feels that it is really unfair to criticize superhero movies because cinema is a “broad church” and has room for every kind of movie.

In an interview with Deadline, the 74-year-old director came out in defense of superhero movies and franchise cinema. The “Mad Max: Fury Road” helmer shared that he watches every kind of film, be it superhero movies from Marvel or anything else.

Miller noted that “cinema is cinema” and it is really broad and gives a platform to everybody to showcase their style of storytelling. He feels that everything rests on the shoulders of the audience.

“To be honest, in terms of this debate, cinema is cinema and it is a very broad church. The test, ultimately, is what it means to the audience,” Miller said.

The Academy Award-winning filmmaker shared a special quote from Swahili storytellers to address the debate. He said that those storytellers used to go by the philosophy that if the story they told was bad, then it was their fault. But if the story was good, then it belongs to everybody.

The comments made by Miller comes after Scorsese stirred a controversy with his interview with Empire last month when he compared the films produced by Marvel Studios to theme parks and stated that superhero movies are practically not “cinema.” He further said that superhero movies don’t depict the emotional and psychological experiences of a human being.

Kevin Feige and the Russo Brothers also defended the Marvel Cinematic Universe last month. Feige noted that it is really unfortunate to hear such remarks from a an esteemed director who has done so much for the cinema and he added that everyone who works on these movies absolutely “loves cinema.”

On the other hand, Anthony Russo said that Scorsese doesn’t own cinema.

In related news, the “Happy Feet” director also shared that he is not finished with “Mad Max” and is planning to drop a sequel to “Fury Road” really soon. Miller explained that he is not done with the intriguing story of “Mad Max” and there is certainly another movie coming soon.

The movie starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in lead roles turned out to be a massive success for Miller. The movie received 10 Academy Award nominations. The film won six Academy Awards for Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing.

The New York Times named it the nineteenth “Best Film of the 21st Century So Far.”
