GGG 'Open' To Fighting Japanese Boxer, Would Rather Talk About Space Satellites Than Canelo
Gennady Golovkin recently revealed he would "absolutely" fight a famous Japanese boxer and talk about space satellites than a Canelo Alvarez rematch.
Ahead of his IBF middleweight title bout with Sergiy Derevyanchenko, Golovkin is already looking forward to fighting Ryota Murata of Japan. Most in boxing assume that should Golovkin manage to secure an impressive win against Derevyanchenko, he would have a ticket for a third showdown with Mexican star Alvarez.
In a media scrum last Thursday before a press conference for his fight versus Derevyanchenko, “GGG” stated that he is “absolutely” open to fighting Japan’s Murata, Boxing Scene reported.
“One-hundred percent. Absolutely, I am open for this. And of course, we already made a first step with a world championship fight [with Derevyanchenko]. And absolutely, I’m looking forward [to fighting Murata],” Golovkin said.
If Golovkin wins, he would hold the IBF title. Which means that the Golovkin vs. Murata fight would be a middleweight title unification bout since Murata holds the WBA’s secondary 160-pound championship title.
The Japanese fighter is extremely famous is in native country and reports claim that the said fight would pack a capacity crowd of nearly 60,000 into Tokyo Dom e.
Due to Murata’s fame, Golovkin believes that it will be an important fight for the redemption of his career.
“It’s very, very important. I’m sure it’ll be a great fight,” Golovkin added.
Golovkin-Murata match has been discussed several times by Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, who happens to be Murata’s co-promoter.
Aside from Murata, the Kazakhstan fighter is still linked with a third fight with Canelo. In almost every Golovkin interview, Canelo’s name is always being brought up. However, Golovkin has been consistent with his stand of not wanting to hear about Canelo anymore.
In fact, in an interview with Business Insider, Golovkin even said that he would rather talk about other stuff like space satellites than a third fight with the Mexican boxing star.
"I really don't think about this subject (Canelo) at all. Let's talk about space or something else. I really know more about satellites and space than about Canelo," Golovkin exclaimed.
Prior to the said interview, Golovkin already stated that he is somewhat resigned to the distinct possibility of a third fight with Canelo.
“Let me say this, as I told you before, I was ready to fight in September. It was their [Alvarez’s Team] decision not to [fight], so let them sort their own things out. And let them make up their own minds. Ask them. I will move on,” Golovkin explained.
