'Girl Meets World' Pilot Reunites Old 'BMW' Cast: 'It Was Like No Time Had Passed,' Danielle Fishel Says
“Boy Meets World” concluded its run on television more than a decade ago, but co-stars Danielle Fishel and Ben Savage have reunited, thanks to the “Girl Meets World” pilot they’re filming.
Savage, who famously played Cory Matthews in the situation comedy, told the audience at the second annual ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas, that the emotion in the last episode of the old series was real. “It was almost like saying goodbye to our childhood,” Savage told the audience, according to Access Hollywood. “It’s hard for me to even watch that scene. That was kind of like the end of our childhood. It wasn’t just the end of our show. For us personally, it really meant a lot.”
Rider Strong, who played Cory’s best friend Shawn Hunter, explained how hard the last scene was to film. In fact, they only did it once. “We did that last scene in one take because we were all just wrecked,” Strong said. “It was our last scene in front of an audience. It was so close to home that there was no filter between Shawn and Rider at that point. It was the same person freaking out.”
According to Fishel, who played the love of Cory’s life, Topanga Lawrence, the old friends instantly clicked the same way they did in the 1990s. “Reuniting with Ben has been even better than I could’ve possibly imagine it was going to be,” Fishel said via video message at the festival, Access Hollywood reported. “The minute we walked into rehearsal, Ben was Cory and I was Topanga, and we were together, and it was like no time had passed.”
Even though Fishel is engaged to Tim Belusko, she explained that she and Savage have their own special connection that resembles that of a married couple. “There is something so special about the bond we share,” she said. “I always tell people -- it seems a little weird -- but it does feel like [Ben] is my husband. He will always be my first husband.”
“Girl Meets World” centers around Cory’s and Topanga’s marriage and their 13-year-old daughter.
