Gloria Estefan has no regrets about turning down the opportunity to sing with Jennifer Lopez and Shakira in the 2020 Super Bowl Halftime Show.
During an appearance on "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen" Wednesday, the Cuban-American performer confirmed that she was invited to perform alongside Lopez and Shakira and addressed the 52-year-old singer-actress' comments about having to share the honor with another icon.
"Look, this is the bottom line. You have very little time, like 12 minutes or something, to get things on and off the set," Estefan, 64, was quoted as saying by Page Six. "So, could you do it with one person? Yes, but I think they wanted to throw a Miami and Latin extravaganza and they tried to pack it as much as possible."
The "Conga" star then threw some subtle shade at Lopez, who said in her recently released documentary that the NFL using two Super Bowl halftime headliners was the "worst idea in the world."
"OK, and imagine what J.Lo would have said if I was the third [performer]!" Estefan told host Andy Cohen. "I literally would come out, done 'Shake Your Body' [and 'Conga'] and out. It was their moment. Plus, I didn't want to go on a diet in December."
In Lopez's "Halftime" documentary, which opened the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this month, she argued that the NFL should have picked just one to headline the halftime show.
"This is the worst idea in the world to have two people do the Super Bowl," Lopez said of having to cut her set short in order to split time with Shakira. "This is something I have been working for and hoping for for years."
Lopez's manager, Benny Medina, echoed her sentiments.
"Typically, you have one headliner at a Super Bowl," he said in the documentary. "That headliner constructs a show and, should they choose to have other guests, that's their choice. It was an insult to say you needed two Latinas to do the job that one artist historically has done."
As for Estefan, she is one of the few singers who have performed at the Super Bowl halftime show more than once. She performed during the "Winter Magic" halftime show in 1992. She returned on stage for "A Celebration of Soul, Salsa and Swing" in 1999 alongside Stevie Wonder, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Savion Glover.
Shakira, who just announced her split from longtime partner Gerard Pique, has yet to address Lopez's comments. However, in a previous interview with Cosmopolitan, the "Waka Waka" hitmaker said, "It wasn't an easy show to put together."
