'God Of War: Ragnarok' Is Sony's Last Cross-Gen PlayStation Game; Announcement Reportedly Happening Wednesday

The highly anticipated game "God of War: Ragnarok" is reportedly the last game Sony will roll out on cross-generation PlayStation consoles and while developers are still mum about its release date, an announcement or a surprise treat for fans might happen on Wednesday.

Sony will no longer support first-party cross-generation releases and according to Reddit user Onion00048, the Japanese gaming giant will start doing this after the launch of "God Of War: Ragnarok." They also said that the likelihood of Sony supporting a cross-gen PlayStation release will happen if "a developer desperately wants a PS4 port of their game which is unlikely."

In a Reddit post, the user claimed that PlayStation Studio will focus on the PS5, noting, "from 2023 onward, we will only see PS5 exclusives from first-party developers along with the shift to PC ports becoming more and more gradual."

It is worth noting that in January, Bloomberg reported about Sony deciding to keep producing PlayStation 4 to ease the pressure on the production of its next-generation console, suggesting Sony might keep on supporting cross-gen PlayStation titles for another year or two.

While the Japanese gaming giant has not yet confirmed any of these claims, fans anticipate something good related to the "God Of War" franchise might happen on Wednesday. On April 20, the franchise celebrates its fourth anniversary and the last day of the reactivation period of Cory Balrog's Twitter account.

Over the past weeks, developers at Santa Monica studio, the team behind the "God Of War," have been hyping fans. Balrog is the creative director of the first "God Of War" title and while his account reactivation or permanent deactivation happens to be a pure coincidence, to some fans, it might have something to do with the upcoming title.

"God of War" cinematics producer Estelle Tigani previously said in a tweet that she has to go back to the Santa Monica office after two years of working from home to "work on something super exciting for God of War: Ragnarok."

Although the producer did not drop any details, her job description hinted at the possibility that what they are working on may have something to do with a new gameplay trailer for the upcoming game.

Sony has not yet revealed the release date of "God Of War: Ragnarok" but it earlier confirmed the game will be playable on PlayStation 4 and PS5.
