KEY POINTS

  • The Golden Globes will be bicoastal for the first time in history
  • Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will be hosting from different locations
  • The 78th Annual Golden Globes will take place on Feb. 28, 2021

With less than 24 hours until nominations are announced for the 78th Annual Golden Globes, the details of how the star-studded event might look like have started to emerge. Taking a unique route to pull off the awards ceremony amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the show will go bicoastal for the first time in history.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will be hosting this year’s event from their respective locations, Variety has learned. Poehler will be live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California while Fey will broadcast the ceremony live from The Rainbow Room in New York City.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), NBC, and producers made the decision after realizing that it would be virtually impossible to hold such a grand event amid the global health crisis. However, this is not the first time an award ceremony will be aired simultaneously from two locations.

In 1953, the Academy decided to broadcast the 25th Academy Awards on television. Apart from being the first Oscars ceremony to be televised, it was also the first ceremony to be held in Hollywood and New York City simultaneously.

Meanwhile, it is yet to be seen if all the nominees will be invited to participate in person or not. Last year’s Primetime Emmys saw presenters and nominees taking part in the event by appearing in-person, with winners giving pre-recorded and live speeches via video conferencing.

This will be the fourth time that Fey and Poehler will be hosting the high-class event and the first time since 2015.

The nominations for the upcoming Golden Globes will be announced by Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson on Wednesday. Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland” is considered to be the frontrunner in most of the categories and is poised to get the most number of nominations. The movie will get stiff competition from movies like Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods,” George Wolfe’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman.”

The 78th Annual Golden Globes will take place on Feb. 28, 2021.

As far as the pandemic is concerned, California and New York are two of the worst-affected states in the U.S. The former has seen more than 3.3 million cases and 41,819 deaths while the latter has witnessed 1.4 million cases and 44,070 fatalities.

Meanwhile, the nation saw 114,703 new infections and 3,632 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking its death tally to 457,856.
