‘The Good Wife’ Spinoff Spoilers: ‘The Good Fight’ Creators Had To Rewrite Script After Donald Trump’s Victory
Reality is stranger than fiction. Creators of “The Good Wife” spinoff series, titled “The Good Fight,” were forced to rewrite the script of after Donald Trump won the Presidential Elections after defeating Hillary Clinton.
The creators and executive producers of the CBS show, Robert and Michelle King, wanted “The Good Fight” to feel as real as possible. Entertainment Weekly received the script of the season premiere which shows the alterations made to the original one. “Like most pollsters, we thought Hillary Clinton would win the presidency, so we wrote scenes about Diane [Lockhart] retiring from the law because she ‘broke every glass ceiling,’” the Kings wrote on the script page.
Shooting for the premiere had already begun before Donald Trump emerged as the President-Elect. “Obviously, we needed to rewrite -- on the eighth day of shooting,” the creators told the publication.
“The Good Fight” kicks off with Diane (Christine Baranski) watching Trump’s inauguration with a stunned expression. “The show tends to be a satire of the liberal mindset,” the Kings wrote on the script page. “So it felt funny and awful to play off of Diane’s stunned reaction to the inauguration.”
“The Good Fight” begins a year after the events of “The Good Wife” series finale. A financial scam has wiped out all of Diane’s savings forcing her to work after retiring. She starts working at Chicago’s pre-eminent law firms where Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo) also works at. The scandal not only forced Diane out of retirement, but also destroyed the reputation of Diane’s lesbian goddaughter, Maia (Rose Leslie).
The series also stars Sarah Steele as Eli’s daughter Marissa, Delroy Lindo, Bernadette Peters, Justin Bartha, Erica Tazel and Paul Guilfoyle.
“The Good Fight” will simultaneously premiere on CBS and CBS All Access on Sunday, Feb. 19. After which, all episodes of “The Good Wife” spinoff will exclusively premiere on CBS All Access, the network’s streaming service.
