GOP Senator Calls Trump 'Nutty' Over Election Fraud Claims: It’s 'Embarrassing'
KEY POINTS
- Romney calls Trump's voter fraud allegations 'nutty' and 'loopy'
- Trump discussed appointing Sidney Powell as special counsel
- The president urged Republican supporters to join a 'wild' protest on Jan. 6
A GOP senator and former presidential candidate called President Donald Trump “nutty” for repeatedly floating election fraud claims and other conspiracy theories in an attempt to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election.
“He’s leaving Washington with a whole series of conspiracy theories and things that are so nutty and loopy that people are shaking their head wondering what in the world has gotten into this man,” Utah Sen. Mitt Romney said during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.” A former governor of Massachusetts, Romney was the Republican nominee for president in the 2012 election.
Trump has continued to entertain schemes to extend his tenure as president, including imposing martial law as suggested by former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
During a White House meeting on Friday, Trump also floated the idea of giving lawyer Sidney Powell authority to oversee investigations on voter fraud as special counsel. Powell had previously claimed that a Venezuelan plot rigged voting machines in the United States.
It is unclear if Trump would appoint Powell as special counsel. The position is typically appointed by the country’s attorney general, not the president.
“I understand the president is casting about, trying to find some way to have a different result than the one that was delivered by the American people. It’s really sad in a lot of respects and embarrassing because the president could, right now, be writing the last chapter of this administration with a victory lap with regards to the vaccine,” Romney said.
President-elect Joe Biden won the U.S. election by 306-232. The electoral college formalized Biden’s victory on Dec. 14. The Congress is scheduled to meet on Jan. 6 to formally finalize the election results — a process Trump hopes to disrupt.
"Peter Navarro releases 36-page report alleging election fraud 'more than sufficient' to swing victory to Trump https://washex.am/3nwaBCe. A great report by Peter. Statistically impossible to have lost the 2020 Election. Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!" Trump tweeted on Saturday.
The Jan. 6 gathering between House and Senate lawmakers is a formality. While the protests would unlikely affect the process, several pro-Trump Republicans, including Georgia’s Representative-elect Marjorie Taylor Greene, said they plan to disrupt the meeting.
“On January 6th, @RepMoBrooks and I will OBJECT and REJECT the fraudulent electoral votes from several states across the country. As soon as I met with Mo on December 2nd, I knew that I was in 100%!” she wrote on Twitter.
