ABC’s “Gospel of Kevin” recently experienced a cast shakeup even before it premiered.

According to Deadline, “Vice Principals” star Kimberly Hebert Gregory will be replacing Cristela Alonzo. The former will now serve as the female lead opposite Jason Ritter. Alonzo previously appeared in the pilot, which was picked up by ABC. The official release date for “Gospel of Kevin” hasn’t been announced yet by ABC.

“Gospel of Kevin” centers on Kevin (Ritter), a man who is tasked by God with a mission to save the world. After his failed suicide attempt, Kevin goes home to his widowed twin sister, Amy (JoAnna Garcia), and niece for a time. He will be faced with a huge crisis involving Yvette (Gregory), a warrior of God, who explains to Kevin that he’s been tasked by the Almighty with a secret mission.

Last month, ABC dropped a 15-second trailer for “Gospel of Kevin,” which shows the lead character experiencing very normal things during his day-to-day existence. While talking to an unnamed character, Kevin says that he is not a good person. When told that he has been chosen to save the world, Kevin panics because he is not even close to being righteous.

Gregory’s casting in “Gospel of Kevin” is not her first time working under the network. The actress also stars in another one-hour pilot for “Unit Zero.” In addition, she previously starred in the 2012 film, “Red Hook Summer.”

Meanwhile, ABC also picked up four other shows to series last month. “The Mayor” stars Brandon Michael Hall as a young rapper who runs for mayor only as a publicity stunt. But when he actually gets elected, Hall’s character panics because he does not know what he should do. “Mayor” also stars “Glee” alum Lea Michele and “Community” actress Yvette Nicole Brown.

“The Crossing,” meanwhile, is a time travel story starring Steve Zahn and Natalie Martinez. In the series, American war refugees travel back in time to present-day America in search for asylum. Also picked up by ABC is “For the People,” which is created by Shonda Rhimes. It revolves around a group of young lawyers that handle high-stakes federal cases. Zach Braff will also headline a yet-to-be-titled comedy on the network.
