Butch Gilzean or Cyrus Gold (Drew Powell) will return to “Gotham” Season 4 as a zombie named Solomon Grundy. Fox

Nobody likes having their character killed off in any TV series, but Drew Powell from “Gotham” is an exception. In fact, when his character, Butch Gilzean, was finished off by Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) during the Season 3 finale, he was happy about it. The reason? Powell will play a different character in the series: a zombie named Solomon Grundy.

Speaking to Comic Book about his new role, Powell said he felt “giddy like a school girl” when he was given the new role. Despite his transformation, Powell said Butch’s fans need not worry because the big guy won’t be completely gone.

“I do think there’s going to be a lot of Butch still in Grundy and I think that makes perfect sense in the way that [producer John Stephens] and the writers have set this up and so I’m really excited to kind of now bring the two together in this new character that I really love,” he said.

When Butch was pronounced dead at the hospital in “Gotham” Season 3, doctors discovered that his real name wasn’t really Butch — it was Cyrus Gold. Comic book fans all know that Cyrus Gold is the 19th Century man who eventually became the evil zombie named Solomon Grundy, according to Heavy. The character was first introduced in “All-American Comics” #61 in October 1944.

When this bombshell was revealed, comic book aficionados became really, really excited. Over the years, the zombie has received different origin stories, the most popular of which was him dying in Gotham City’s Slaughter Swamp. In some variations, he was killed there, but in others, his body was simply brought there after his death. Several years later, he was resurrected as Solomon Grundy.

Aside from Grundy, another exciting character to appear next season will be the Scarecrow. The origin story of the Scarecrow, also known as Jonathan Crane (Charlie Tahan), was established during episode 15 of Season 1. Detective Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and his partner Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) went after his father, Gerald, for harvesting the adrenal glands of his murder victims, and Jonathan was caught in the crosshairs.

But now, his character is all set to wreak havoc in Gotham City. “Scarecrow comes back in Season 4,” said David Mazouz, the actor who plays Bruce Wayne. “It’s super creepy, too. You’re gonna love it,” Powell further teased.

“Gotham” Season 4 will premiere on Sept. 21 on Fox.
