Is ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Coming Back For Season 16? Renewal, Cancellation Details
“Grey’s Anatomy” Season 15 will end tonight, but the season finale will not be the end of the ABC drama. The Shonda Rhimes-produced show has been renewed for two more seasons.
ABC announced last week that “Grey’s Anatomy” isn’t anywhere near cancellation yet. The longest-running primetime medical drama will continue to hold that title for at least two more years. That means “Grey’s Anatomy” will have a Season 16 and Season 17, going even longer than “ER.”
Most fans figured Season 16 was all but guaranteed. After all, star Ellen Pompeo (who plays Meredith Grey) signed a massive contract for Seasons 15 and 16. The deal is worth $20 million per year. She is earning $500,000 per episode.
“Grey’s” remains one of ABC’s top shows. It has averaged about 6.8 million viewers this season with 1.57 in the all-important 18-49 demographic, according to TV Series Finale. It’s the network’s top scripted show in the demo and second only to “The Connors” in terms of overall viewers (not including reality shows).
It seems pretty clear that “Grey’s Anatomy” isn’t the kind of program that gets canceled. The creative team will decide when they’re ready to end it.
“I think Shonda has said publicly that we’ll decide collectively when to wrap it up, and we’ll end the show together,” Pompeo told E! News in February. “I don’t think she has any plans to continue the show without me, or any of the originals for that matter...but who knows, it’s Hollywood. Listen, they can kick you out any time they want...but I think she has said publicly that we’d like to end this together, and her and I and the other three originals that are on the show—Jim Pickens, Chandra Wilson and Justin Chambers—I think we’d like to sort of finish this together.”
“Grey’s Anatomy” will keep its Thursday at 8 p.m. EDT timeslot next year. Season 16 will also upgrade a few recurring characters to series regulars. Jake Borelli (Levi Schmitt), Chris Carmack (Atticus Lincoln) and Greg Germann (Thomas Koracick) will be full-time cast members.
The “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 15 finale airs Thursday, May 16 at 8 p.m. EDT.
