  • This isn't the first time Stefani talked about auditioning for the film
  • The role she sought after was eventually offered to Angelina Jolie
  • “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” is an action-romance flick

Gwen Stefani has revealed she once auditioned for “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” On Wednesday, the “The Voice” coach recalled how she went in for the film only to be beaten by Angelina Jolie.

During the segment “Burning Questions,” on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Ellen DeGeneres asked Stefani to drop the name of a movie role she once auditioned for that people might be surprised to know. “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” Stefani answered, adding, “Angelina beat me!”

“Wow, that could have gone a whole different way. Talk about ‘Sliding Doors,’” said DeGeneres, to which Stefani quipped, “That could’ve been a different story!”

While many may have been shocked by her answer, that was not the first time Stefani talked about auditioning for the film. On a 2016 episode of “The Howard Stern Show,” she also opened up about the experience, telling Howard Stern that she was “very” competitive at that time.

“I went to a bunch of auditions,” she told the host at the time. “It was very competitive and I wanted to do it, but I wanted to do music more,” she added.

In a 2008 interview with Vogue, Stefani also revealed she actually thought she would get the role. “It was between me and Angelina Jolie, and I’m like, ‘Oh, great. I got a shot here,’” she told the magazine. “The whole acting thing really feels like something I could do. Whenever I’ve done it, whenever I had moments where it works, it’s just like performing,” she added.

Stefani and Jolie were not the only ones who sought after the role of Mrs. Smith in the 2005 film. Nicole Kidman, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Chloe Sevigny also auditioned for the role, which was ultimately played by Jolie. Brad Pitt, Jolie's now estranged husband, was the other main lead in the action-romance flick.

“Mr. and Mrs. Smith” follows the story of a bored married couple who are shocked to learn they both work as assassins and have been hired to assassinate each other. The film famously brought Jolie and Pitt together and earned at least $478 million at the global box office.
