'Half-Life: Alyx' Rumors: Valve Dares Modders To Create New Kind Of VR Experience
KEY POINTS
- Valve gives modders a chance to show off creativity
- Valve giving workshop and tools to help gamers come up with mods
- Valve enjoying soaring sales with VR game success
Valve is enjoying record numbers with "Half-Life: Alyx" which has been received pretty well. It appears the company has struck a nerve in the virtual reality gaming segment with VR users and sales soaring. With the success they have been experiencing, Valve appears to be taking it to the next level.
The beauty of Valve's games is that the company is pretty flexible about what programmers may want to do. Mods are nothing new, something that people embark on to provide a different kind of experience. Ideally, this would go against some gaming companies who prefer to leave their gaming content as is. But that is not the case for Valve. They have even come out with a workshop and a tool called the Alyx Workshop Tools suite to encourage modding for "Half-Life: Alyx."
Valve announced the beta release of the editor tools recently, allowing anyone to create new levels, modes, textures, and animations for "Half-Life: Alyx." Aside from that, there will also be a Steam Workshop where gamers can skim through the modded content uploaded by anyone from the community.
The Alyx Workshop tool is only the first beta release, meaning there are more improvements to be expected. For now, gamers and modders will have to make do with the features available. That includes:
- Hammer, the latest version of the Source 2 level editor
- Material editor
- ModelDoc, something that will help in the compilation of modes and animations
- AnimGraph, an animation tool
- Particle Editor, for creating new particle effects
- Subrect Editor, creating smart textures
- Source Filmmaker, the Source 2 cinematic render and animation tool.
To get "Half-Life: Alyx" modders started, Valve has even included some sample maps for them to work on. This should help guide modders on how to go about things. Also, a "Half-Life: Alyx" Workshop Tools documentation is available here.
Valve has upped the stakes and will likely try to pluck out some ideas from the creative minds of people currently hooked to "Half-Life: Alyx." What remains to be seen if these mods would cause some bugs to the game or even problems that most are not currently experiencing. Then again, that could be part of Valve's goals - figuring out if there are there programs bugs that need addressing.
