‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 2 Spoilers: Ofglen’s Return Is Confirmed, But We Have Questions
Alexis Bledel’s performance at the beginning of “The Handmaid’s Tale” was highly praised, so it’s no surprise that the Hulu drama has made her a series regular for Season 2. However, given how her character Ofglen (also known as Emily and Ofsteven) left off in the first season of the dystopian drama, we have some questions about her return.
Why Didn’t They Kill Her? Ofglen didn’t just try to go for a joyride when she stole that car in the first season of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Bledel’s character brutally ran over officers while trying to do so, which made some fans assume that the government killed her. After all, Gilead was ready to kill Ofwarren (Madeline Brewer) after her suicide attempt with the baby. Perhaps Gilead doesn’t care as much about its police as it does making sure their species lives on. Audiences will find out in Season 2.
Where Is Ofglen? She was reassigned to a new couple after her genital mutilation surgery, but she hasn’t been seen since committing grand theft auto. Are the Eyes holding her in prison again? Is she somewhere worse? As a member of Mayday, the resistance movement, she could have valuable information for Gilead’s leaders.
Will Ofglen Reunite With Offred? After refusing to stone Ofwarren, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) was taken into custody. No one knows where the guards are taking her, not even the Commander (Joseph Fiennes) or Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski). It’s possible that handmaids who are resisting Gilead’s oppression are sent to the same place.

Will Offred Be Able To Help Her? Though Offred is still under Gilead’s control, being pregnant changes her status. Carrying a baby gives Offred some leverage, but viewers will have to wait until Season 2 to find out just how much.
Can We See Ofglen’s Flashbacks? We’ve seen Offred’s life as June, and we’ve seen glimpses into the lives of Serena, Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and Nick (Max Minghella). Why not see Ofglen’s life as Emily?
This seems very likely since “Handmaid’s Tale” showrunner Bruce Miller said he hopes to explore more supporting characters in Season 2. “Aunt Lydia [Ann Dowd] is one of my most fascinating characters,” Miller told the New York Times. “We would like to explore her back story, and what the lives of the aunts are like. The networks between the Marthas. What is the commander doing all day long, and what is his life like? What are his responsibilities?”
Spoiler Alert: The end of Ofglen’s story in “The Handmaid’s Tale” book is discussed below.
Is Ofglen Returning Just To Die? In Margaret Atwood’s book, Ofglen realizes that the Eyes are coming for her. She doesn’t want to divulge any secrets of the resistance while being tortured, so she decides to hang herself. The TV show has largely stayed faithful to the book. Could we see this play out onscreen in “The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 2?
Hopefully, we’ll have all of these questions answered when “The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 2 premieres, but fans will have to wait for a while. The series, which will have 13 episodes in Season 2, won’t return to Hulu until 2018. No official air date has been set.
