The Hangover Part II shatters box office record despite lack of originality
The Hangover Part II bested the comedy-debut record set by The Simpsons Movie ($74 million) in 2007 to become the best comedy sequel which has grossed $118.1 million in its first four days of domestic release since May 26, 2011.
The sequel is expected to gross another $20 million on Monday as it is the Memorial Day. Including $59 million from overseas, it will be almost $200 million.
The original film in 2009 enjoyed sales of $45 million on its opening weekend before generating $467.5 million overall in worldwide box-office.
The Hangover Part II lacks originality in the sense that the plot is the same but with a different locale. The writer-director Todd Phillips with co-writers Craig Mazin and Scot Armstrong used the original film as a literal template. Both films is about Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and Doug (Justin Bartha) experiencing a wild, drug-fueled night that none of them can remember the following day and then find themselves tracking down a missing acquaintance.
DreamWorks Animation and Paramount's animated comedy Kung Fu Panda 2 that followed 2008 Kung Fu Panda also opened on May 26 and grossed $53.8 million in its first four days. In China, the movie grossed $18.5 million.
