Heineken Ad Shows Pepsi’s Kendall Jenner Commercial How It’s Done
Pepsi may have botched their attempt at getting political in their advertising — the brand's controversial commercial featuring Kendall Jenner is now infamous. But a new Heineken commercial with a similar bent is being praised across the internet for its far more tasteful approach to social justice.
In its new video titled “#OpenYourWorld,” the brand introduced three sets of individuals with opposing political positions on climate change, social justice, LGBTQ issues and more. Meeting for the first time and knowing nothing about each other, they were presented with a challenge: both had to work together on a build-by-numbers project and then ask each other questions about their ideologies.
Pre-recorded videos of their political positions were played for both partners in each team to watch, and the pairs had to decide whether to leave or stay and discuss their differences. All three pairs remained to chat over a beer, with one man even shifting his anti-transgender view to one of acceptance by the end of the experiment.

The Heineken ad comes right on the heels of Pepsi’s failed jab at political marketing. As International Business Times reported earlier this month, Pepsi was ultimately forced to pull the ad after a wave of backlash and claims that the brand had trivialized protest and the Black Lives Matter movement.
"Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding," the brand said in an April 5 statement. "Clearly we missed the mark, and we apologize. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are removing the content and halting any further rollout. We also apologize for putting Kendall Jenner in this position."
