Hilary Swank’s Netflix Series ‘Away’ Releases Emotional Trailer For Spaceship Drama
Hilary Swank’s space mission is going to pull at the heartstrings. Netflix released a trailer for the new TV series on Monday, and it’s clear that Swank’s astronaut is intended to make audiences cry.
The trailer introduces audiences to Swank’s Emma Green, an astronaut going on the first mission to Mars. She leaves behind her husband Matt (Josh Charles) and teenage daughter Lex (Talitha Bateman) for the three-year journey. Emma and her international team of astronauts have to cope with the sacrifices they’ve all made for the historic mission.
“Away” is executive produced by Jason Katims, who is best known for “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood,” two dramas remembered for their realistic relationship dynamics and making viewers cry. It seems like the same can be expected from “Away,” which marks Katims’ first project for Netflix.
“We really wanted to create a show that was in space, but one that was also deeply human, emotional, relatable, and really grounded in human emotion, rather than in science fiction, and we wanted to look at what it's like to be away in different forms,” he explained in a press release.
Emma’s mission away is made more difficult by her husband’s medical issues. Matt couldn’t go on the trip to Mars because of a pre-existing condition, one that worsens while Emma is on the ship. The writers say they were inspired by the relationship between Barack and Michelle Obama when developing the marriage of the fictional NASA employees.
Though the 10-episode series is fictional, it is inspired by an Esquire article by Chris Jones about astronaut Scott Kelly. Jones is a producer on the show. In addition to Katims, executive producers also include showrunner Jessica Goldberg, creator Andrew Hinderaker, Swank, Matt Reeves, Ed Zwick, Adam Kassan and Jeni Mulein.
Joining Swank, Bateman and Charles in the cast as series regulars are Ray Panthaki, Ato Essandoh, Mark Ivanir, Vivian Wu.
All 10 episodes of “Away” will premiere Friday, Sept. 4 on Netflix.
