‘House Of Cards’ Crew Accuse Kevin Spacey Of ‘Predatory’ Behavior
“House of Cards” star Kevin Spacey is once again in hot water now that eight people from the set of the Netflix show have come forward and accused him of “predatory” behavior that made their working environment pretty “toxic.”
A former production assistant told CNN that Spacey sexually assaulted him during one of the show’s early seasons. The employee claimed that Spacey put his hands down his pants without consent while he was driving the actor to the set. Later, Spacey cornered him and touched him inappropriately.
The others shared their own harrowing experiences, but requested for anonymity out of fear of professional repercussions. One crew member even said that Spacey “would put his hands on me in weird ways,” including massaging his shoulders and touching his stomach.
The others accused Spacey of nonconsensual touching, and they said that the actor was fond of making crude comments towards production staffers who were typically young and male.
In light of the new accusations, Netflix and “House of Cards” producer Media Rights Capital (MRC) revealed that they already encountered a complaint against Spacey in the past. However, they are not aware of these new accusations.
“We are deeply troubled to learn about these new allegations that are being made to the press concerning Kevin Spacey’s interaction with members of the crew of ‘House of Cards.’ As the producer of the show, creating and maintaining a safe working environment for our cast and crew has always been our top priority,” the company said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
“We have consistently reinforced the importance of employees reporting any incident without fear of retaliation and we have investigated and taken appropriate actions following any complaints,” the statement continued. “For example, during our first year of production in 2012, someone on the crew shared a complaint about a specific remark and gesture made by Kevin Spacey. Immediate action was taken following our review of the situation and we are confident the issue was resolved promptly to the satisfaction of all involved. Mr. Spacey willingly participated in a training process and since that time MRC has not been made aware of any other complaints involving Mr. Spacey.”
Spacey’s woes began after he was accused by actor Anthony Rapp, 46, of sexual misconduct dating back to 1986. Rapp, who was 14 then while Spacey was 26, told Buzz Feed that Spacey harassed him at a party when he was carried “up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold.”
“But I don’t, like, squirm away initially, because I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ And then he lays down on top of me,” Rapp said.
Netflix and MRC has cancelled “House of Cards” because of the sexual harassment allegations, and production for Season 6 has been put on halt.
